About Point Reyes Books

The Point Reyes Books Declaration of Interdependence

1. We strive to provide great service and hospitality.

We welcome all who walk through our doors. Our staff is like a family with each of us contributing our unique experiences, voices, and skills in support of education, conversation, and inspiration.

2. We try to be generous, kind-hearted, and collaborative.
We work to build and improve our community by weaving Point Reyes Books into the fabric of community life—making connections between people, supporting local nonprofit organizations, and nurturing new ideas.
3. We encourage writers.
We offer an active author events program grounded in place, community, spirit, and story. We invite noted authors who best reflect these interests to engage in conversations with our community and explore ideas in deeper ways.

 4. We inspire readers.

We curate an inventory of top new books as well as soulful and important books not found elsewhere. We celebrate the literary arts, host book groups, and cultivate adult and youth reading and writing skills in partnership with local literacy projects.

5. We are creative, spirited, and independent.

We establish innovative programs that serve as creative expressions of a truly spirited and independent bookstore, such as: the West Marin Review; the Geography of Hope Literary Conference; Black Mountain Center; and our Community Supported Bookstore (CSB) program.

6. We provide a sense of place and tell stories.

We seek to create a special “community living room” within our extraordinary West Marin physical landscape. We remember the past, relish the present, and envision the future by writing our own stories, making our own history, and leaving this place better for the next generation.

In 2002, we realized a long-time dream of owning a community-serving business. We purchased the Brown Study Bookshop, a sleepy, used bookstore in Point Reyes Station, a small coastal village about an hour north of San Francisco, and opened Point Reyes Books. We see ourselves as more than a bookstore—we're part of a growing movement of independent businesses across the nation creating local, "living economies" and seeking a “living return”—one partially paid by the benefits of living and working in a vibrant community and taking part in sustaining community vitality, the local economy, and the natural environment.

By such measurements of success, Point Reyes Books is doing quite well. We co-founded the West Marin Review, a homegrown literary and arts journal that celebrates the abundance and traditions of our corner of the world. We're proud of the fact that we're one of only a few independent bookstore in the US to publish its own literary journal. In recent years, we've sponsored hundreds of events to bring our town together and draw visitors to our midst. We've hosted an array of authors, artists, workshops, and festivities, including the Wild Book Show, benefiting Artists in the Schools; The Geography of Hope, a conference featuring world-renowned authors who explore the relationship between people and the land.

Next time you find yourself on Main Street in Point Reyes Station, we hope you'll stop by Point Reyes Books. And we hope you'll support your favorite independent bookstore and locally owned businesses wherever you may live.
